Which Build Fits Your Enclosure
Enclosure Type & Recommended Ladder Build
The same animal-safe materials serve very different animals. This matrix pairs each enclosure type with the material and build details that hold up in it — then the free design review turns your dimensions into a drawing.
| Enclosure Type | Recommended Material | Build Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic cat runs & catteries | Galvanized steel, smooth ground welds | Light steps or ramps; rounded profiles protect coats and paws |
| Indoor breeding facilities | Galvanized or SS304 | Easy hose-down surfaces; no crevices for waste to trap |
| Outdoor zoo habitats | Stainless SS304 | No coating to scratch through; stands up to weather and cleaning |
| Primate & monkey enclosures | SS304, heavier sections | Welded one-piece assemblies — no loose joints to work loose |
| Aviaries & small-animal pens | Galvanized, slim rungs | Lightweight climbs sized to the species, not to people |
Site Walkthrough
A Habitat Climb Rebuilt Between Two Feeding Rounds
Nadia is maintenance lead for the small-primate section at a regional zoo. The timber climbing frames in the macaque habitat have weathered into splinters, the keepers want surfaces they can hose, and the vet wants nothing coated inside the mesh. Here is the retrofit as it runs.
Nadia walks the habitat with the head keeper: mesh-to-mesh dimensions, the branch heights the troop actually uses, adult animal weights and jump reach, the hose-down routine and where water drains. Anything a macaque can grip, twist or chew gets written down — these clients test every joint.
Our engineers return one drawing set: SS304 throughout, rung spacing stepped down from the human 280 mm to what the troop can actually span, one-piece welded assemblies with no bolted joints inside reach, and every edge ground and passivated. Flanges land on the habitat frame, not the mesh.
The assemblies arrive trial-welded and photographed, so the overnight crew only sets them and torques the flange bolts — four hours with the troop locked in the den, no site welding, no coating smell, and the habitat opens at the morning feed as if nothing happened.
Introduction day: keepers watch the first climbs while the vet checks every weld and edge by hand. Two weeks later the hose test — full wash-down, no trapped waste, dry in minutes. The material certificate and QC photos go into the zoo's animal-safety file.
| Survey Checklist (you bring) | Acceptance Checklist (you verify) |
|---|---|
| Mesh-to-mesh dimensions and frame anchor points | Flanges bolt to frame, not mesh |
| Animal weights, jump reach and grip size | Rung spacing sized to the species |
| Keeper cleaning routine and drainage | Hose-down leaves no trapped waste |
| Chew and twist behavior notes | One-piece welds, zero loose joints |
| Vet constraints — coatings, edges, toxicity | All edges ground; MTC on file |
Decision Guide
Enclosure Ladder Decisions: Choose This When…
The animals decide most of this for you. Four forks settle the build before the first weld.
| Decision | Choose X when… | Choose Y when… |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Galvanized steel — domestic cat runs and aviaries, dry budgets, animals that do not chew steel | SS304 — zoo habitats, primates, wash-down regimes and any vet rule against coatings inside the mesh |
| Assembly | One-piece welded — primates and parrots that work every bolt loose given a season | Bolted modules — catteries and pet suppliers who reconfigure layouts or ship flat |
| Rung sizing | Species spacing — cats and small animals that cannot span the human 280 mm | Keeper-rated 280 mm at Φ20 — dual-purpose climbs the staff also use for feeding rounds |
| Fixing | Frame flanges — habitats with structural steel or timber frames carrying the load | Mesh-tie light rails — aviaries and pens where only the mesh exists and loads stay small |
The mistake of copying the playground look
- The mistake: ordering a powder-coated, colorful climbing frame for a primate or parrot habitat because it looks right in the catalog photo.
- The consequence: the coating is chewed off within weeks, ingested flakes trigger a vet incident log, and the exposed steel rusts under the hose regime — a replacement inside eighteen months.
- The correct move: bare SS304 with ground welds for any chewer — send us the species and weights in the RFQ, and the free design review fixes material and spacing before you commit.
Feature · Advantage · Outcome
What Every Enclosure Ladder Line Buys You
| Feature | Advantage | Your Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Species-sized rung spacing | steps the animal can actually span | the climb gets used, not ignored |
| Ground, passivated edges | nothing sharp meets a coat or paw | vet checks pass on introduction day |
| One-piece welded assemblies | no bolted joints inside animal reach | nothing works loose, ever |
| Bare SS304, no coatings | nothing to chew off or ingest | the habitat stays vet-clean for decades |
| Free design review with dimensions | drawing fits your mesh, not a guess | one order, one install, no rework |
