Inside the Cage: Hoops, Straps and the Details That Contain a Fall
Ladder cages look simple from the ground, which is exactly why the details separate a compliant cage from decorative steel. The working principle is the 700 mm circle: small enough that a climber's body cannot build momentum toward the stringers, large enough that a backpack or harness does not snag on every hoop. We form that circle from 40 x 5 mm flat-bar hoops set every 1500 mm along the route, then stitch 30 x 3 mm vertical straps around them so the hoops act together instead of independently. Straps carry the sliding contact; hoops carry the structure; welds tie both to the ladder's stringers, and the whole assembly begins 2.2 m above the base — high enough to walk in, low enough to catch the first dangerous section of the climb.
| Hoops | 40 x 5 mm flat bar, 700 mm diameter, every 1500 mm |
| Vertical straps | 30 x 3 mm, welded to every hoop |
| Bottom entry | Flared mouth for walk-in access |
| Cage start | 2.2 m above base level |
| Finishes | HDG to ISO 1461 (85–100 µm), SS304 or SS316 |
Because every component is fabricated in-house, cages ship either integrated with a new ladder or as standalone kits for retrofit — the same hoops, the same straps, the same inspection trail.
Field Story — 14 Climbs, One Purchase Order
How a Water-Treatment EPC Package Turned 14 Scattered Climbs Into One Compliant Shipment
Multi-unit buyers rarely fail on ladder engineering — they fail on consolidation, documentation and freight. This is what a tank-farm package looks like when the factory plans it as one program.
The EPC's mechanical lead inherited a municipal plant schedule with access ladders scattered across it: four settling tanks at 4 m, seven filter galleries at 6 m, three digesters at 9 m — all HDG, all in humid, chlorinated air. Bid documents wanted EN ISO 14122-4 geometry and one compliance file per climb, and the site wanted them inside a 25-day window before mechanical completion.
We quoted the full schedule in 24 hours as a single itemized package. Consolidating 14 units pushed the order over the 10-unit volume tier, stepping the per-meter rate down on every ladder in the same purchase order. Every cage ladder was built to common geometry — rungs Φ20 at 280 mm, clear width 500 mm, cage Φ700 mm from 2.2 m — so site crews learned one bolt pattern and reused it 14 times. Each 9 m digester unit went out in two flanged splices; the 4 m and 6 m units shipped whole.
Each unit carried its own MTC 3.1, DoC and ISO 5817 C weld record, and the whole order loaded into containers on a factory-issued loading plan. Sea freight for a package of this size typically runs $280–550, and because trial assembly and photo documentation happen before dispatch, commissioning photographs for the client handover file were ready before the ladders left Shijiazhuang.
| Package Line | Qty × Spec |
|---|---|
| Settling tank ladders | 4 × 4 m HDG caged, cage from 2.2 m |
| Filter gallery ladders | 7 × 6 m HDG caged, single pieces |
| Digester ladders | 3 × 9 m HDG caged, two flanged splices each |
| Self-closing gates | 14 bolt-on units at $60–180 each, hole pattern matched at factory |
| Documentation | 14 individual compliance files — MTC 3.1, DoC, calcs, trial-assembly photos |
Whole-Program Judgment Call
New Cage Ladders, Hoop Retrofit, or a Stair Tower — Reading Your Site Honestly
Before pricing 14 anything, decide what each climb actually needs. The three forms below cover almost every industrial site we have shipped to across 50-plus countries since 2004.
| Choose This | When |
|---|---|
| New-build cage ladders | existing steel is corroded or of unknown provenance, the audit demands a material certificate trail, or the climb is new construction — you buy a 10-year documented asset, not a ladder |
| Hoop-and-strap retrofit | stringers and rungs are structurally sound and only the cage is missing — hoops 40×5 and straps 30×3 bolt to verified steel at a fraction of replacement cost |
| Inclined stair tower | the route carries public visitors, tools or two-way traffic every shift, and the civil budget exists — stairs amortize their cost in carried loads and lower training demands |
| Mixed program | typical tank farm — new cage ladders on process tanks, one stair on the control-building route; one purchase order covers both and the volume tier counts every unit |
Program-level mistakes we see on first orders
- Quoting units one by one — single-SKU quotes hide the 10-unit and 50-unit tier steps; consolidate sites or quarters before you accept any number
- Buying gates from a second vendor — bolt patterns drilled on site rarely align; order gates with the ladders and the factory matches hole patterns before dispatch
- Leaving container planning to the freight forwarder — splice count decides what fits; a factory loading plan keeps 14-m pieces legal and the freight inside $280–550 territory
- Splitting standards across the site — EN geometry on one tank and OSHA on the next doubles your inspection checklist; hold the whole program to one standard set
Program Features, Buyer Outcomes
What Ordering Cage Ladders as One Program Changes for You
The five features below are why multi-unit buyers come back with their second site — each row is a factory practice translated into your project result.
| Feature | Advantage | Your Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed heights on one PO | 4 m, 6 m and 9 m units in one consolidated order | one vendor file, one payment run, one delivery plan |
| Volume tiers at 10 and 50+ units | rate steps down across every ladder in the order | site consolidation shows up as visible savings, not a favor |
| Common geometry across units | one rung spacing, one width, one bolt pattern | crews learn the install once and repeat it 14 times |
| A compliance file per unit | MTC 3.1, DoC and weld records unit by unit | handover audits close per asset — no documentation gaps |
| Factory container loading plan | splices and lengths planned for legal loading | freight lands in the $280–550 range with no port surprises |
