The Dimensional Envelope: What Each Number on the Drawing Buys You

A safety cage ladder is a chain of six or seven numbers, and every one of them exists because a standard or a failure mode demanded it. When you compare quotes, compare these numbers — not the headline price — because a 250 mm rung pitch or a 600 mm cage will pass a glance test and fail an audit. Here is what each figure on our standard drawing controls.

DimensionStandard valueWhat it controlsAnchored by
Rung diameter and pitchΦ20 mm at 280 mmBoot grip and stride rhythm; proof load 1.5 kN per rungOSHA 1910.23 general requirements

Vertical straps30×3 mmDistributes impact around the hoop circumferenceShop standard, verified per drawing

These values are recorded on the approval drawing you sign before production, then verified again at trial assembly — so what you approved is what ships.

Follow the Load, Boot to Bolt

Load Path Anatomy: How a Climber's Weight Travels Through a Safety Cage Ladder

A safety cage ladder is a chain of transfers — every kilogram a climber applies walks a fixed path from boot to building, and the cage adds its own branch the instant containment is called upon. Understanding the path is understanding why the dimensional envelope on this page holds the numbers it holds: each number protects one transfer. Trace both paths below and every dimension on your drawing finds its job.

TransferMember Doing the WorkWhat the Load TestsDimension Protecting It
Boot to rungΦ20 mm bar, every step of the climbBending of a single bar under a moving, booted load1.5 kN rating per rung at 280 mm pitch
Rung to stringerThe two welded joints at each bar endWeld integrity under millions of small cyclesWelds inspected to ISO 5817 Level C
Stringer to standoffBracket connections up the wallLoad concentration where the ladder meets the hostBracket spacing and fixings per the calculation sheet
Standoff to structureAnchor bolts in the substratePull-out and shear at the final interfaceFixing drawing values — torque, type and pattern
Torso to strap — the cage branch30×3 mm verticals the slip delivers the body toContainment load entering the barrel wallStrap continuity around the Φ700 envelope
Strap to hoop to stringer40×5 mm rings at 1500 mm, tied to the railsRadial load resisted while the ring stays roundHoop section and spacing — the wall's stiffness budget

Both paths are only as strong as the weakest transfer — which is why our five-stage QC walks them with paper: MTC 3.1 for the members, weld records for the joints, trial assembly for the whole chain, photos archived 10 years. Send your climb height and the free dossier quote returns every transfer documented, inside 24 hours.

Repair, Replace or Extend

Reader Decision Guide: What to Do With the Ladder You Already Have

Most safety cage ladder projects start in front of an existing ladder. Three honest routes exist — and only one of them involves buying a complete new assembly. Match your bay to the cards below before requesting the dossier, and the quote you receive will be for the work the load path actually needs.

Repair in place when the path is intact

The bay is traceable, the geometry matched the envelope when surveyed, and the findings are local: a sprung strap, a damaged flare, a gate that lost its spring. Order the parts against the original drawing where one exists, restore the member to spec, log the repair against the inspection baseline. A sound load path deserves maintenance, not replacement.

Replace the assembly when the path is broken

Unknown steel, corroded stringers, hoops no longer round, a cage that starts at the wrong height — these are load-path failures, and welding over them spends money on a structure that still cannot be certified. A new assembly at $95 per metre HDG ships in 15–25 days with the complete dossier; retiring an unverifiable bay is the cheaper decision within one budget cycle.

Extend the system when the duty grew

Sound ladder, new reality: usage rose past daily, the climb now carries a platform obligation at 6 m, or the rule moved above 24 ft on a new US install. Order the extension as a system — platform at $150–400, gate at $60–180, LSS or PFAS line where arrest is owed — so the extended load path is engineered as one chain, not patched into an old one.

Undecided between cards? Photograph the bay end to end and send it in — the free dossier review names the route and prices it, repair parts or new assembly, inside 24 hours.

Safety Cage Ladder FAQ

Is the 300 lb rating enough for my application?
Yes. Our safety cage ladders are rated 1.5 kN per rung — about 338 lbs — exceeding the common 300 lb spec for industrial access. Heavier-duty ratings are available on request.
Which material should I choose?
For most indoor and outdoor industrial duty, hot-dip galvanized Q235B (HDG 85–100 μm per ISO 1461). For chemical, marine or food-grade environments, choose stainless steel SS304 or SS316.
Are MTC and DoC included with the order?
Yes. Every safety cage ladder ships with a Declaration of Conformity and EN 10204 3.1 material certificate, plus a structural calculation sheet.
Is the compliance dossier really free?
Yes. The compliance dossier — DoC, MTC and structural calcs — is included with every quote and order at no extra cost.
How high can one safety cage ladder go before platforms are needed?
Under EN ISO 14122-4, climbs above 10 m are split with rest platforms every ≤6 m; single runs to 25 m on OSHA builds. Above that we split the climb into stages with a rest platform at least every 6 m ($150–400 each) and a self-closing gate ($60–180) at the top exit.
Can a tall safety cage ladder ship in sections?
Yes. Tall builds ship as bolted sections — and every one is trial-assembled in our shop before packing so the flange and hoop alignment is proven. Walk-through exit/guardrail kits run $90–250.
Which standard governs if our site sits under Australian rules?
AS 1657:2018. It requires caging from 3 m of climb, which our standard build covers by starting the cage at 2.2 m. Tell us the enforcing code and we fabricate and document to it.
Are you a factory or a trading company?
We are the manufacturer. Dengtai has welded ladders in Shijiazhuang since 2004 — 3000 m² of works, 1500 t annual output. Quotes come direct from the shop within 24 hours.
