How ANSI A14.3 and OSHA Work Together on One Cage Ladder
First, the name. Buyers often type ANSI a143 or A-143 when searching — the correct designation is ANSI A14.3, the American national consensus standard for fixed ladders. The ladder cage requirements inside it are detailed design rules, and it exists alongside — not instead of — the OSHA regulations that US inspectors actually enforce.
The two documents answer different questions. OSHA 1910.23 sets the general requirements — for example a minimum 16 in clear width for rungs — and OSHA 1910.28 sets the fall-protection duty that triggers above 24 ft for US sites. ANSI A14.3 then supplies the granular dimensions engineers need on drawings: rung spacing, clearances, side-rail extensions and cage geometry. A ladder that meets both is the safe default for US-bound equipment.
