- Rungs — any rung with visible corrosion loss at the weld, a bend, or a history of impact is cut out and replaced by code; never straighten a yielded rung
- Hoops and straps — deformation, missing straps or cracked hoop joints trigger coded replacement; containment geometry is not a repair-in-place item
