European Cat Ladder vs Caged Cat Ladder

Both names describe ladders fixed to a building — but they answer different questions. This table shows where each type earns its keep, so you order once and order right.

Site Walkthrough

When the Spec Says Katladder but the Climb Is Industrial

Pieter maintains a grain terminal outside Rotterdam. The renewal spec he inherited says katladder — the light cat ladder every Dutch facade wears. But this climb serves the silo top at 9 m, twice a day, in all weather. Here is how the project actually resolves.

The survey — duty, not the name

Walking the silo with our checklist, Pieter counts what the climb carries: operators with sampling kit, twice daily, year-round. Height 9 m, cage territory under EN ISO 14122-4. Wall build at each bracket line, dust-explosion zoning near the gantry, and where the climbing route crosses the conveyor cover all get logged.

The drawing — the naming fork, settled

Our engineers return the drawing with the fork made explicit: a light 6063 cat ladder for under 3 m facade hops — or this, a 1.5 kN-per-rung caged climb from 2.2 m, hoops 40×5 at 1500 mm. Pieter's terminal needs the second. The same drawing set names it correctly for his inspection file.

Install day — steel where aluminum went

The trial-fitted HDG run bolts up in one shift: standoff brackets at 1800 mm centers holding the silo wall 200 mm clear, cage hoops stacked, rest platform set at the 6 m mark. No welding inside the zoning — everything arrived drilled, trial-assembled and photographed at the factory.

Handover — the inspector reads EN ISO

The insurer's inspector checks rung spacing 280 mm, cage Φ700 from 2.2 m, platform at 6 m — and files the DoC to EN ISO 14122-4 with the MTC 3.1. The word katladder never appears; the geometry answers for itself.

Decision Guide

Cat Ladder Decisions: Choose This When…

The cat ladder name covers two different machines. Four forks settle which one your site actually gets.

DecisionChoose X when…Choose Y when…
Ladder typeLight European cat ladder — facade hops under 3 m, a climber with hand tools, nothing below to protectIndustrial caged ladder — climbs past 3 m, daily duty, or any route your insurer audits to EN ISO 14122-4
MaterialHDG Q235B from $95/m — outdoor industrial air, the value default behind the cageSS304 (1.8x) / SS316 (2.5x) — marine salt, grain-dust wash-down, or food-grade terminals where rust is a rejection
Standard setEN ISO 14122-4 — cage above 3 m, rest platforms at 6 m intervals, ladder safety system required above 10 mAS 1657:2018 or BS 4211 — Australian and UK sites, same geometry, DoC written to the standard your auditor holds
FixingWall standoff brackets, 200 mm at 1800 mm centers — masonry and concrete walls that carry the climbSaddle-mount anchors — tanks and silos where no flat wall exists and the shell takes the load

The mistake of ordering the name, not the duty

  • The mistake: copying katladder from an old spec onto a 9 m daily climb, so a light 6063 aluminum facade ladder arrives where a caged industrial access was meant.
  • The consequence: no cage from 2.2 m, rungs that flex under a loaded operator, and an insurer who fails the climb at first audit — followed by an emergency re-order while the silo stays accessible only by permit scaffold.
  • The correct move: send the climb height and duty in the RFQ — we specify caged versus light-cat against EN ISO 14122-4 in the free drawing review, before you commit a meter.

Cage Cat Ladder FAQ

Is a cat ladder an industrial ladder?
Yes - in industrial purchasing, 'cat ladder' is a common alternative name for a caged ladder or fixed vertical ladder with a safety cage. We build them in hot-dip galvanized steel or stainless steel to OSHA 1910.28 and EN ISO 14122-4.
Should I choose galvanized or stainless steel?
Hot-dip galvanized Q235B is our best-value option for outdoor and general industrial use (HDG 85-100 um per ISO 1461). Choose SS304/SS316 when you need maximum corrosion resistance in chemical, marine or food-grade environments.
Does a cage cat ladder include the full compliance file?
Yes - every cage cat ladder ships with its full compliance file at no extra cost: DoC (OSHA 1910.28 / EN ISO 14122-4), MTC 3.1 material certificate and engineer-signed structural calculation sheet.
How fast can you ship?
We quote within 24 hours and standard production runs 15–25 working days from drawing approval; stock geometry may ship sooner — confirmed in your 24-hour quote. Volume orders and custom sizes are scheduled to your project deadline.
How is a European cat ladder different from your caged ladder?
A Euro-style cat ladder is a light ladder fixed flat against a facade for building maintenance, often 6063-T5 aluminum and sized for a person with a bucket. Our cage cat ladder is a steel caged vertical ladder rated 1.5 kN per rung for daily industrial access.
Which type suits facade maintenance work?
For occasional low-level window or facade work, a light European cat ladder is often enough. For routine access above 3 m, or wherever EN ISO 14122-4 or OSHA 1910.28 apply, the caged ladder is the compliant choice — the comparison table below lines them up.
Do you make cat ladders to custom building heights?
Yes. Every cage cat ladder is cut to the height you measure — cage hoops follow from 2.2 m, MOQ is one ladder, and production runs 15–25 working days. The compliance file travels in the same crate.
How does cat ladder pricing work?
Hot-dip galvanized flights start at $95 per meter, SS304 runs about 1.8x and SS316 about 2.5x, and a complete 6 m ladder lands at $600–900 ex-works. Send the height, material and mounting detail for a quote within 24 hours.
