Application Comparison
European Cat Ladder vs Caged Cat Ladder
Both names describe ladders fixed to a building — but they answer different questions. This table shows where each type earns its keep, so you order once and order right.
| Aspect | European Cat Ladder | Dengtai Cage Cat Ladder |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Facade and window maintenance on European buildings | Daily industrial access to roofs, tanks and plant |
| Common material | 6063-T5 aluminum, light sections | Q235B hot-dip galvanized steel, SS304/SS316 optional |
| Duty level | Light duty — a climber with hand tools | 1.5 kN per rung, caged from 2.2 m |
| Fall protection | None beyond the handhold of the stiles | Φ700 mm cage, hoops 40×5 at 1500 mm, straps 30×3 |
| Governing standards | Local building rules for light access | OSHA 1910.28 · EN ISO 14122-4 · AS 1657 · BS 4211 |
| Cost logic | Cheapest per meter, lightest to wall-fix | HDG from $95/m — compliance file included |
Site Walkthrough
When the Spec Says Katladder but the Climb Is Industrial
Pieter maintains a grain terminal outside Rotterdam. The renewal spec he inherited says katladder — the light cat ladder every Dutch facade wears. But this climb serves the silo top at 9 m, twice a day, in all weather. Here is how the project actually resolves.
Walking the silo with our checklist, Pieter counts what the climb carries: operators with sampling kit, twice daily, year-round. Height 9 m, cage territory under EN ISO 14122-4. Wall build at each bracket line, dust-explosion zoning near the gantry, and where the climbing route crosses the conveyor cover all get logged.
Our engineers return the drawing with the fork made explicit: a light 6063 cat ladder for under 3 m facade hops — or this, a 1.5 kN-per-rung caged climb from 2.2 m, hoops 40×5 at 1500 mm. Pieter's terminal needs the second. The same drawing set names it correctly for his inspection file.
The trial-fitted HDG run bolts up in one shift: standoff brackets at 1800 mm centers holding the silo wall 200 mm clear, cage hoops stacked, rest platform set at the 6 m mark. No welding inside the zoning — everything arrived drilled, trial-assembled and photographed at the factory.
The insurer's inspector checks rung spacing 280 mm, cage Φ700 from 2.2 m, platform at 6 m — and files the DoC to EN ISO 14122-4 with the MTC 3.1. The word katladder never appears; the geometry answers for itself.
| Survey Checklist (you bring) | Acceptance Checklist (you verify) |
|---|---|
| Actual climb height and daily duty frequency | Rungs 280 mm, 1.5 kN per rung |
| Wall or tank build at every bracket line | Cage Φ700 from 2.2 m, hoops 40×5 @≤1500 |
| Crossing hazards — conveyors, pipes, canopies | Rest platform placed at 6 m |
| Which standard your inspector audits to | DoC names the exact standard set |
| Atmosphere — dust, salt, wash-down | MTC 3.1 + ISO 1461 coating record filed |
Decision Guide
Cat Ladder Decisions: Choose This When…
The cat ladder name covers two different machines. Four forks settle which one your site actually gets.
| Decision | Choose X when… | Choose Y when… |
|---|---|---|
| Ladder type | Light European cat ladder — facade hops under 3 m, a climber with hand tools, nothing below to protect | Industrial caged ladder — climbs past 3 m, daily duty, or any route your insurer audits to EN ISO 14122-4 |
| Material | HDG Q235B from $95/m — outdoor industrial air, the value default behind the cage | SS304 (1.8x) / SS316 (2.5x) — marine salt, grain-dust wash-down, or food-grade terminals where rust is a rejection |
| Standard set | EN ISO 14122-4 — cage above 3 m, rest platforms at 6 m intervals, ladder safety system required above 10 m | AS 1657:2018 or BS 4211 — Australian and UK sites, same geometry, DoC written to the standard your auditor holds |
| Fixing | Wall standoff brackets, 200 mm at 1800 mm centers — masonry and concrete walls that carry the climb | Saddle-mount anchors — tanks and silos where no flat wall exists and the shell takes the load |
The mistake of ordering the name, not the duty
- The mistake: copying katladder from an old spec onto a 9 m daily climb, so a light 6063 aluminum facade ladder arrives where a caged industrial access was meant.
- The consequence: no cage from 2.2 m, rungs that flex under a loaded operator, and an insurer who fails the climb at first audit — followed by an emergency re-order while the silo stays accessible only by permit scaffold.
- The correct move: send the climb height and duty in the RFQ — we specify caged versus light-cat against EN ISO 14122-4 in the free drawing review, before you commit a meter.
Feature · Advantage · Outcome
What the Industrial Cage Cat Ladder Buys You
| Feature | Advantage | Your Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 kN rungs at 280 mm | industrial duty a light cat ladder cannot carry | loaded operators climb daily without flex or doubt |
| Cage Φ700 from 2.2 m | hoops 40×5 at 1500 mm, straps 30×3 | the fall question answered before the audit asks |
| Naming fork made explicit | drawing states cat-ladder versus caged, with reasons | you order once, order right, first time |
| Standard-set DoC | EN ISO 14122-4, AS 1657 or BS 4211 as your site requires | the inspector reads his own standard, not a translation |
| HDG from $95/m factory-direct | cage and compliance file in the price | European duty at a fraction of catalog cost |
