Height by Height

When Does a Monkey Ladder Need a Cage?

Standards switch their requirements on at different heights, and the right order depends on where your climb sits. Read the height band, see what each standard says, and order the configuration that clears every market you ship to.

Climb HeightWhat the Standards SayWhat to Order
Below 2 mNo cage trigger in BS 4211 or EN ISO 14122-4 territoryOpen fixed flight, HDG or painted
2 – 3 mBS 4211 hoops start around 2 m for UK sitesCaged flight if UK-bound; open flight elsewhere
3 – 10 mCage mandatory under EN ISO 14122-4 and AS 1657; Singapore WSH requires platforms above 9 m at ≤9 m intervalsStandard caged flight, Φ700 mm cage from 2.2 m
Over 10 mEN ISO 14122-4 allows caged climbs up to 10 m — beyond that a ladder safety system is required, with rest platforms at ≤6 m intervalsSplit runs with rest platforms at $150–400 each

Site Walkthrough

Twenty Monkey Ladders, One Standard Package

Ravi procures M&E packages for a battery plant in Batam that answers to a Singapore headquarters. The site requisition says monkey ladder — twenty of them — and the HQ audit will read to WSH and EN ISO 14122-4. Here is how one local word becomes a compliant fleet.

The survey — twenty climbs, one sheet

Ravi's team walks all twenty locations with one survey sheet per climb: height bands between 4 m and 9 m, wall builds, the salt air off the strait, and which climbs sit above operating lines. Each sheet lands in one RFQ — because twenty separate quotes is how specs drift apart.

The drawing — one geometry, four columns

Our engineers return one drawing set: the same Φ700 cage from 2.2 m, hoops 40×5 at 1500 mm, rungs Φ20 at 280 mm — with a four-column table showing the values against EN ISO 14122-4, OSHA 1910.28, WSH and BS 4211. Landings hold the WSH spacing rule on the 9 m climbs.

Production — one batch, tier pricing

Twenty units clear the volume tier at 10 — the per-meter rate steps down on the same drawing, no renegotiation. HDG runs through ISO 1461 at 85–100 μm, every weld inspected to ISO 5817 Level C, trial-assembled and photographed before the container loads for Batam.

Handover — the HQ audit reads, not measures

Install crews bolt up each caged flight to the marked brackets. The Singapore auditors arrive, open the compliance pack — DoC per standard column, MTC 3.1, structural calcs, QC photos — and clear twenty climbs in one afternoon. The word monkey never appears; the standards do.

Decision Guide

Standard Package Decisions: Choose This When…

The height table tells you when a cage is due. These four forks decide how the compliance package gets built around it.

DecisionChoose X when…Choose Y when…
Document routeFour-column pack — EN ISO, OSHA, WSH and BS 4211 DoCs in one file — multi-market fleets and HQ audits that read any regimeSingle-standard DoC — one site, one regulator, no export path in the asset's future
GeometryUniversal Φ700 / 2.2 m / 280 mm build — clears every listed standard with one drawing, one jig, one QC lineMarket-specific hoop layout — a sole-market order where the local inspector measures his own table only
Batch strategyOne consolidated batch over the 10-unit tier — per-meter rate steps down automatically at volumeSplit phased orders — construction phasing that cannot wait for consolidation, at single-tier rates
MaterialHDG Q235B from $95/m — inland sites and standard tropical dutySS316 (2.5x) — strait-front and process-vent locations where the audit checks corrosion records annually

The mistake of buying the site word without the paper

  • The mistake: ordering the local fabricator's monkey ladder at 20% under our quote — identical steel to the eye, no DoC, no MTC, no QC record, because the requisition only said the site word.
  • The consequence: the HQ audit refuses undocumented climbs on an operating site, and the replacement happens twenty times over at emergency pricing — roughly double the saving that started it.
  • The correct move: make the compliance pack a line in the requisition — our 24h quote arrives with the standards checklist attached, so the audit trail exists before the steel does.

Monkey Ladder Cage Standard FAQ

Is a monkey ladder the same as a cat ladder?
Yes — same caged fixed ladder, different name. The monkey ladder cage standard applies to both.
Which standards do you meet?
We manufacture to EN ISO 14122-4, OSHA 1910.28, Singapore WSH and BS 4211, and we do not claim CE certification for building fixed ladders.
Is the compliance checklist really free?
Yes. Get the free compliance checklist and DoC sample with every order — no extra charge.
Which standard applies if my site is in the US?
OSHA 1910.28. It requires fall protection above 24 ft, and the route that still allows cages transitions out by November 2036 — so new US installs increasingly specify ladder safety systems instead. We document either route on the DoC.
What does EN ISO 14122-4 require on a monkey ladder?
A cage above 3 m of climb, caged climbs allowed up to 10 m — beyond that a ladder safety system is required, with rest platforms at ≤6 m intervals, and rung spacing inside 300 mm. Our standard 280 mm rung pitch sits comfortably inside that limit.
How do you prove weld quality?
Welds are inspected to ISO 5817 Level C, materials arrive with EN 10204 3.1 certificates, and hot-dip galvanizing is verified against ISO 1461 at 85–100 μm — the middle three stages of our five-stage QC chain.
Does the standard change for indoor monkey ladders?
The cage triggers do not move indoors — EN ISO 14122-4 applies its 3 m rule wherever the ladder is fixed. What changes is finish: indoor runs often take painted carbon steel, since weather exposure no longer justifies hot-dip galvanizing.
Can you build to AS 1657 for Australia?
Yes. AS 1657:2018 sets its cage trigger at 3 m, the same as EN ISO 14122-4, and our standard geometry already clears it. Australian orders ship with an AS 1657 conformity statement in the compliance file.
