What a cage does well

Hoops 27 to 30 in wide at no more than 6 ft 6 in apart keep a slipping climber against the rungs instead of ejecting them sideways off the ladder. On climbs at or under 24 ft, that passive restraint still does real work every day.

What it cannot do

Arrest a fall. A climber who loses grip can carom down the cage interior — the pinball effect — and arrive at the base with the fall barely slowed. The enclosure also invites overconfidence: it looks like protection while leaving the vertical drop live.

Why systems win

A rail or cable with a carrier sleeve moves with the climber and locks at the first instant of a slip, converting the whole climb into protected climb. That is the performance OSHA now requires on new ladders over 24 ft — protection attached to the person, not the wall.

Are cage ladders dangerous?
