The Five Inputs Our Engineers Ask For First

A cage ladder design is only as good as the site data behind it — these five inputs decide almost everything downstream.

Height comes first, and it is more than a ladder length. Climbing height fixes whether a single run up to 25 m is possible, where rest platforms fall under EN ISO 14122-4's 6 m rule, and whether OSHA's 24 ft threshold puts you inside the ladder safety system requirements that fully replace cages after November 18, 2036. Second is the anchor base: wall construction, standoff geometry and bracket capacity — our standard wall mounting runs 8 mm brackets at 1800 mm centres for a 200 mm clearance, but only your wall decides if that holds.

Third, environment. A dry indoor silo and a coastal effluent plant get different answers: Q235B with hot-dip galvanizing as the workhorse, stainless steel where corrosion rules the budget. Fourth, the governing standard — OSHA 1910.23 and 1910.28, EN ISO 14122-4, AS 1657:2018 or BS 4211 — because cage start heights, platform spacing and hoop details all key off it. Fifth, export requirements: container limits, the 14 m single-piece ceiling for galvanizing, and the packing method that protects the finish on an ocean leg quoted per sailing at current rates.

Send those five facts and the review is genuinely free — most first-pass drawing sets follow within a day.

Standard Geometry or Custom Engineering — How to Tell

Repeat builds skip custom engineering and cut cost. Forcing a standard ladder onto a non-standard structure costs more later. This table draws the line before you request either.

Design QuestionStandard Geometry Handles ItCustom Engineering Required
Climb heightany height in single pieces up to 14 m, standard rung and cage modulessplices, staged platforms or unusual landing geometry above that envelope
Mounting surfaceflat wall, standoff 200 mm at 1,800 mm bracket centres, M12 anchor plancurved tank shells, chimney profiles, elevator shafts — saddle brackets and load paths calculated per structure
Governing standardOSHA 1910.23 and 1910.28, EN ISO 14122-4, BS 4211, AS 1657 with standard cages from 2.2 moverlapping jurisdictions, deviation requests or client specs stricter than the code minimum
EnvironmentHDG to ISO 1461 for general outdoor dutychemical or marine exposure driving SS304 at 1.8x or SS316 at 2.5x with revised weld and finish specs
Cost effectbaseline $95/m HDG — engineering already amortizedcustom adds engineering time; repeat orders of the same geometry then drop back to standard pricing

Cage Ladder Design FAQ

What views are included in the cage ladder design drawings?
Elevation, plan, section and detail views with full dimensions — rung spacing, clear width, cage hoops, flared entry and fixing details.
How tall can a cage ladder be built?
Up to 25 m in a single run; multi-run systems with rest platforms beyond that.
Do DoC and MTC ship with the design drawings?
Yes — the DoC, MTC 3.1 and structural calculation sheet are included with the full drawing set.
Is the design review really free?
Yes — a free design review is included with every request, and quotes are typically returned within 24 hours.
What information do you need from us before design starts?
Five inputs: climb height, anchor base and wall construction, service environment, the governing standard, and export or packing needs — with those we can produce the first drawing set.
Which standard should our design target — OSHA, EN ISO 14122-4 or AS 1657?
Follow your jurisdiction: OSHA fixes duties by the 24 ft threshold with the cage exemption ending Nov 18, 2036; EN ISO 14122-4 sets a 3 m cage start and 6 m platforms; AS 1657:2018 governs Australia — we design to whichever you name.
How does a coastal or corrosive site change the design?
Material and finish are design inputs — standard builds use Q235B with hot-dip galvanizing, while corrosive or coastal sites move to stainless steel — noted on the drawings and DoC.
What does the structural calculation sheet check?
Rung loading at 1.5 kN per rung, cage hoop and strap sizing, bracket anchorage for the 200 mm standoff and splice connections — engineer-signed and shipped with the DoC and MTC 3.1.
