When a Landing Platform Triggers — and How It Gets Sized

Fatigue, not height alone, drives the landing platform rule. A caged climb is safe at 12 m and exhausting at 12 m; the platform exists so a climber carrying tools can stop, stand upright and recover without leaving protected space. Regulators encode that intent with numbers. EN ISO 14122-4 introduces rest platforms on taller routes and expects them at roughly 6 m intervals; OSHA 1910.28 asks for landings at least every 50 ft of caged section. Whichever governs your site, the engineering logic is identical: split the climb into flights, terminate each cage at a platform, and restart the next flight from its deck.

Twenty-Two Meters of Climb, a Deck Every Flight

An EPC engineer describes the gallery access towers that replaced rope-and-harness maintenance along a shiploader conveyor. The build card is tower two.

Before — idlers serviced on a rope

The gallery runs 22 m at its tallest tower, and idler changes meant technicians on rope access over a working conveyor — slow, expensive, and dependent on a contractor's schedule. The port wanted its own crew on its own structure, and the marine air was eating the existing access steel faster than the paint program could follow. Any replacement had to make a 22 m climb something a technician in coveralls would do twice a day without ceremony.

During — flights, decks, and one kit per tower

We drew each tower as segmented flights with landing platforms inside the OSHA every-50-ft discipline: decks at 7.5, 15 and 22 m, each flight fully caged in its own right — cage from 2.2 m above every deck, hoops Φ700 at 1500, rungs Φ20 at 280 rated 1.5 kN. Landings sized for a climber with an idler roller to stand clear of the ladder line, guardrails at 1100 mm. HDG to ISO 1461 for the marine-coastal band with the coating report in the file, and each tower shipped as one kit — ladder, cages, platforms — trial-assembled and photographed before the crate closed.

After — rope access cancelled

The port's own crew took over idler work, and a change that used to be a two-contractor day became a morning with a toolbox. Decks double as staging points, so parts ride the tower in stages instead of hanging off belts. The insurer re-rated the access from contractor-rope to permanent-engineered on the strength of one compliance folder, and the rope-access retainer ended.
