Size Changes, Priced by Stage
Change Cost Table: What a Size Change Costs at Each Stage
Custom sizes live and die on one number — the rise. Get it right late and a ladder that was $95/m becomes scrap plus a reorder. Here is what changing height, platform position or section count costs at each real node of our process.
| Stage | Size Change You Bring | Cost to You |
|---|---|---|
| Before first CAD | any rise, platform elevation, exit side — even metric to imperial swaps | Free — the drawing simply restarts, review still 1–3 days |
| Approval drawing loop | re-surveyed heights, top-rung landing corrections | Free — paper re-lengthens a proven section, no re-engineering |
| Released, before cutting | section count for bolt-together splits, packaging, finish | Free — requote in 24 hours on the new length |
| Rails cut, rungs not yet welded | height within the cut rails' reach (shorter only) | Material difference — offcuts stay ours, no penalty |
| Welded assembly | none geometrically — taller means new rails | New rails at material difference; cage hoops usually reuse |
| Galvanized (ISO 1461) | no size change survives re-dipping intact | Full rework of affected parts — we will say if a new unit is cheaper |
| Crate built | documents only — as-built length on the packing list | Free — paperwork follows the real configuration |
The lesson in one line: a re-survey costs nothing before drawing release and everything after — so measure twice, release once.
Getting the Height Right
Order the Exact Size, or Order Standard and Adapt?
When the climb is 6.4 m, buyers face three routes: order a custom 6.4 m unit, order a 6 m catalog ladder and bridge the gap, or order 7 m and cut it down on site. Only one of those keeps the compliance file alive. The checklists decide it.
Red flags — the size route will hurt you
- "Cut it down on site" — field cuts burn the galvanizing and void the DoC
- Bridging gaps with shimmed anchors — top rung below platform level is a trip hazard and an audit finding
- Measured from the wrong datum — rise from grade, not from the top of foundation concrete; a 100 mm error repeats on every unit
- Custom size priced as custom engineering — re-lengthening a proven section is a 24h quote, not a surcharge event
Green lights — order the exact size
- 100 mm steps on height — the factory builds your number, 2 to 14 m single piece, bolt-together above
- Top rung lands flush with platform — engineered on the approval drawing, not shimmed on site
- Cross-section stays standard — Φ20 rungs, 500 mm width, Φ700 cage already pass OSHA / EN ISO / AS clauses
- Trial assembly proves the length — sections bolt-checked before crating
Custom Size Means Height and Platform — Not Reinvented Geometry
Buyers often assume a custom size means re-engineering everything above the anchors. The opposite is faster and cheaper. The cross-section — Φ20 mm rungs at 280 mm pitch inside a 500 mm width, wrapped in a Φ700 mm cage of 40×5 hoops at 1500 mm centers with 30×3 straps — already satisfies the cage geometry clauses of OSHA 1910.28, EN ISO 14122-4 and AS 1657. Customizing those numbers buys no extra compliance and only adds the 10–20% custom-geometry surcharge. What does move freely: the overall height to land the top rung flush with your platform, the position of a rest platform on taller climbs, the exit direction, and the material — galvanized baseline, SS304 at 1.8x, SS316 at 2.5x for marine service.
| You customize | Stays standard | Why it stays |
|---|---|---|
| Overall height | Φ20 rungs at 280 mm pitch | Compliant climb feel in every market |
| Platform position | 500 mm clear width | Satisfies OSHA, EN ISO and AS width clauses |
| Exit direction and style | Φ700 cage, hoops 40×5 at 1500 | Cage geometry already passes audits |
| Material | Cage start at 2.2 m | Matches where cage protection begins |
Measure the rise and platform elevations, mark the exit side, and the free drawing review turns those into a length that fits the first time.

What an Exact-Size Build Buys Your Site
Five features of the custom-size route, and the outcome each lands on your project.
| Feature | Advantage | Your Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Height in 100 mm steps | any rise from 2 to 14 m in one piece | no shims, no gap-bridging, no site cutting |
| Standard cross-section, custom length | compliant geometry without re-engineering | custom size without the custom-geometry surcharge |
| Top rung engineered to platform level | landing flush designed on paper | exit meets the deck, not a step-stool moment |
| Bolt-together sections above 14 m | trial-fitted flanges before shipping | tall climbs align on site in hours |
| 24h quote on your measurements | three numbers price the whole unit | decision made on real figures, same day |
